Witch Gardens - “Aunt Shae/Mean Colleen”

As you may have noticed, Witch Gardens are no stranger to this blog. The signature harmonies and old-fashioned summertime melodies of this Seattle four-piece have earned a special place in my heart. After taking some time to record their upcoming full-length I’d Rather Be Alone, the band has released three tracks that appear on their new 7” record called R-I-P.

“Aunt Shae/Mean Colleen” is the lead single from the EP, and is one of the band’s finest, albeit longest tracks to date. After an intro that wouldn’t have felt out of place on Animal Collective’s Feels, Witch Gardens breaks into more familiar territory with their catchy female-led vocal hooks and traditional sunny melodies. As a statement of purpose, the song lyrics announce that the band has “Something to show you, it’s not a costume… it’s a lifestyle!” Just when you think the song is over, “Mean Colleen” picks up the tail end—a coda that works as a stand-alone pop single in itself.

The suite is coupled with two shorter but equally cheerful songs called “Bakers Dozen” and “Standard Poodle.” All three tracks are currently available for free download on bandcamp. However, I recommend buying the 7” vinyl record from Portland’s Water Wing Records. Keep a keen eye out for the music video for “Aunt Shae/Mean Colleen,” as well as Witch Gardens’ forthcoming full-length I’d Rather Be Alone.

If you were into collecting obscure psych tapes back in late 2010, you may have stumbled across a cassette release called Dire Dish. This debut drone-pop album from the mysterious Australian artist called Angel Eyes was released under the radar on Not Not Fun.

Now, Angel Eyes has a new full-length cassette called Vice to Vice, which is currently out on the Moon Glyph label. This dreamy collection of burned-out alien drone-pop jams is the work of Melbourne’s Andrew Cowie. As if he’s transmitting a murky sludge of ancient extraterrestrial wisdom into the caverns of primordial life, Cowie’s warped vocals, distant drum machine taps, and dizzy synths immerse the listener in waves of color and ambient bliss.

Listen to “Off the Floor,” the almost-danceable seven-minute space jam that lifts you high in the sky onto a bed of pink fluffy clouds infested with neo-reptilian tentacles. Or should I say, wherever your imagination takes you.

Vice to Vice is currently available for sale as a limited edition cassette, with a run of 150 tapes from Moon Glyph. The tape features six spacey tracks, with cover art by Suzanne Pfutzenreuter. Get ‘em while they’re hot.

Waskerley Way - “Sista”

A new digital record has emerged from the UK’s original catwave pioneer Waskerley Way, the moniker of Newcastle’s Michael Bridgewater. It’s called Haunted Tors, and it’s available today for your listening pleasure on bandcamp and SoundCloud.

The album is Michael’s interpretation of a narrative involving the resistance against a tyrannical government, following a loose theme of honoring family and friends. By incorporating elements from various styles including instrumental hip-hop and musique concrète, Waskerley Way achieves melodic compositions which seem to transcend barriers of pop music into some sort of parallel literary realm.

The sounds on Haunted Tors perpetuate a sense of wonder and mystique, tiptoeing on the tightrope between minimalism and complexity. It’s a slightly deeper, more full-bodied collection of songs than we are used to, while still maintaining the glamorous lo-fi pop sensibilities of Waskerley Way’s previous releases.

Listen to “Sista,” the loopy, shoegazing standout posted above, then head over to bandcamp for a name-your-price download of the wondrous new album. You might be surprised by what you hear.

KWJAZ - “A Certain Sprout”

Those who were brave enough to face the cold San Francisco rain last night were treated by an intimate performance of diverse experimental music at Hemlock Tavern, all thanks to the SF based electronic musician Peter Berends, who performers under the moniker KWJAZ. The show also featured an astounding acoustic set from his Not Not Fun label-mate Weyes Blood, as well as performances from Horsebladder and Queen Victoria.

As a former band member of Rangers, KWJAZ specializes in creating long-from, dynamic instrumental soundscapes, blending obscure samples with organic sounds. Armed with a table stacked with a mad scientist’s collection of petals and knobs, samplers and computers, Berends performed a continuous set of ambient jazz grooves with sonic surprises around every corner. This is the type of performance where it is perfectly acceptable to close your eyes and let your mind drift.

Posted above for your listening pleasure is a bonus track from the CD version of his self-titled debut, currently available on Not Not Fun. “A Certain Sprout” is significantly shorter than any other tracks he has released thus far, but nonetheless dreamy. The enchanting jazz melody dazzles the airwaves and tickles the spirit, but certainly leaves you thirsty for more. If you enjoy what you hear, I highly recommended listening to the deeper, twenty-minute arrangements that are present on the album.

Yalls - “Grand Entrance”

“It’s basically a tear it up pizza anthem for our generation.” - @yallsmusic

This fresh instrumental beat from Berkeley’s Dan Casey (a.k.a. Yalls) has been making the rounds since he posted it to his SoundCloud on Monday night, and rightly so. I had the pleasure of being introduced to this track in the flesh during his headline performance at Milk Bar SF on Saturday night, which was one of the best I’ve seen from the local legend.

Everyone was vibin’ hard to the build up, but it wasn’t until the orgasmic drop at the two-minute mark that asses really hit the floor. Originally intended as a wild hip-hop beat, this banger definitely stands on its own. Stacked with high-pitched samples and future-funk hooks, “Grand Entrance” is not be fucked with. In fact, Dan will probably kick you out of the club if you try rapping in his face. You can ride the vibe, just don’t kill it.

And as if one bangin’ beat wasn’t enough, Yalls dropped another one late last night. Enjoy.

Sea Glasses - “they come in dark suits”

Sea Glasses is the latest musical endeavor from Garrett Mombourquette, who previously recorded under the moniker Aux Out. The Dartmouth, Nova Scotia based songwriter recently released a gorgeous new album titled The Sky is Such a Choir Here, currently available for name-your-price download on bandcamp (Deerhunter fans would be unwise to sleep on it). Part-time percussionist Brant Hunter provides drums on the haunting standout “They Come In Dark Suits.”

“Take hold…” Mombourquette sings, in a hushed, ethereal tone, as the guitar melody gently pulls you into the soft and comforting haze of the unknown. Close your eyes and ignore the men in dark suits, they mean you no harm.

April is a pretty good month for birthdays. April is a pretty cool month to start blogging again. Any day is a good day for pizza.

Birthdays is Boston’s Samuel Yager of FMLY fame. Although this track isn’t particularly new, via last summer’s No Fear of Pop premiere, it has resurfaced as part of a teaser compilation for FMLY Fest 2012. Why not grab another slice?

If you plan on being in NYC this summer, you will be a fool to miss this party. The D.I.T. festival will be taking place in Brooklyn, NY on June 22 and 23. In addition to Birthdays, the festival will be showcasing FMLY favorites such as Yohuna, Truman Peyote, Winks, and many more to be announced.

Whether or not you can make it out to FMLY Fest, feel free to snuggle up with your pizza pillow and zone out to the warped vocals on this birthday baby. Make a wish before you blow out the candles, and blow on your pizza before you eat it. Please be safe… when in doubt, put a fixie on it.

Bodyboat is a currently anonymous electronic project from Oslo that has recently caught the attention of the blogosphere with its silky, haunted beats on a couple of solid tracks. You may have stumbled upon the creepy video for Bodyboat’s latest release, “0044,” but it also serves well as a stand alone piece allowing your imagination to run wild.

“Eros” is another outstanding, more pop-centric jam with undertones of subtle darkness hidden beneath the sexy vocal samples. So far, only a few tracks have surfaced under the Bodyboat stamp. They can be found on Bandcamp or Soundcloud. As far as I know this artist is unsigned, but fans of the Tri-Angle label should definitely keep their ears open for Bodyboat’s next move.

Witch Gardens is currently my top contender for the coolest band in Seattle and the cutest band in the world. The old-fashioned, soul-gazing harmonies of this adorable four-piece will warm your heart and bring a teeny-weenie tear to your eye.
